Mountain Biking has been a popular sport for more than 20 years. It is a great source of cardio exercise that can take the rider to trails all over the world.  Ralph Willis, a longtime resident and owner of Ralph Willis Automotive in Salinas, has been enjoying the sport of mountain biking for 20 years. At 63 years of age he meets a few times a week at Toro Regional Park and Fort Ord. The terrain can be fierce with hills to climb and fast down hills. An average ride will be 10 to 12 miles. The group he rides with range from teenagers and riders that are his age and older. He has been known to be the leader of the pack! Riding his mountain bike has kept Ralph healthy and fit. Ralph is so dedicated to his routine that he has sometimes ridden after dark when getting off work. Ralph’s favorite hobby of drag racing is something he has enjoyed for over 40 years. Ralph says the mountain biking helps keep his mind sharp for racing his drag car, a white 1964 Pontiac Le Mans drag car known by some as the “Ghost”. This car has a whopping 540 Big Block Chevy motor. He reaches speeds of 147 miles per hour in the quarter mile! This spring Ralph will be driving a 1959 Blown Corvette Pro Mod drag car that reaches speeds of up to 209 miles per hour in a quarter mile, so you can see why it is important that Ralph keeps his mind sharp and his body able and fit.
